  • Alfred was wounded in the stomach by flanking fire from a machine gun at the Somme. He was initially left for dead but was picked up later by stretcher bearers checking the battlefield at night. His health was affected by this for many years and he died relatively young in the early 1950's . His medals are in the possession of the writer.

  • I never met my grandfather and I have little information about him. His son Robert Alfred Olsen served in WW2 in 75th Squadron
