  • He married Miss Katherine Rogers in December 1909.

    Pitt was present at Kimberley Camp and detached for duty on fit horses in February 1900, as Sergeant.

    'Captured at Koornspruit in March 1900 but was placed in temporary charge of wounded military attache, whom he was instructed to convey to a nearby farm. This he did, and then quietly slipped away with the waggon and returned to Bloemfontein.' (Stowers, p.174)

    Pitt joined the Orange River Colony Provisional Mounted Police in May 1900.

    He left Cape Town aboard the S.S. 'Tongariro' in April 1900.

    Pitt joined the Regimental Staff, North Island Regiment, 8 NZMR as Lieutenant and Paymaster, sailing from Auckland abaord the S.S. 'Surrey' in February 1902. (Stowers, p.174)

    CAPTAIN W.T. PITT

    (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, ;This Day.

    The death occurred on his sixtieth birthday of Captain W. T. Pitt, a leading member of the Maori race. Captain Pitt served with the First New Zealand Contingent in the Boer War, and on the outbreak of the Great War joined the first Maori contingent, seeing service on Gallipoli and in France. In recent years he was a Maori welfare officer under the Native Department, taking a prominent part'in land development schemes. In his earlier years Captain Pitt was a prominent footballer, and was captain of the Poverty Bay,fteam for several, seasons. Latterly lie was a member of .the Maori Rugby Advisory Board.   • I am a great-grandson of Gladys Douglas Dean-Pitt Reid, a first cousin of Captain Pitt. I just wanted to say that I am sorry my branch of the family was mean to his because of his Maori mother. This is very sad, especially because my great-grandmother, being a Birdwood, had Indian blood, although she may not have known it. Again, I apologize, and I admire his service and his heritage.
