  • Promoted to corporal 30 October 1914, shipped to Egypt where he was attached to Staff HQ. with the temporary rank of Sergeant on 4 February 1915

    He was discharged from the NZEF on 19 April 1915 when he was granted an Imperial Commission with 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment as temporary acting 2nd Lieutenant

    According to his surviving brother, Sgt George Edward Read (30021), Horrie had wanted to be where the action was ... and so transferred into Essex Regiment

    He did not have a British service number as they were not issued to Officers until much later

    The Essex Regiment War Diary records that Read was wounded between 14 and 17 August 1915

    The War Diary dated 8th - to 11th records "to firing line in front of Les Boeufs, relieved 4th Worcesters, weather very bad, trenches in very bad condition. Lieut Read killed
