    • Son of Mr. T. George, of Herberton, Cairns, North Queensland, Australia.

Frederick Arthur George (eldest son) left Tasmania with his three younger brothers James Christopher and Eldred for New Zealand in 1900. Fred and his second brother were tradesmen and the two younger boys worked as labourers in New Zealand. The brothers were later joined by two sisters Miss Clara and Miss Emily George. Clara married Mr Bourke and had 1 son and 2 daughters still possibly alive in New Zealand. It is believed Emily married ME Hillier.

A labourer Labourer to Tradesmen brothers, leather craftsman at the time of enlistment

Eldred married a German in New Zealand and she became pregnant a week before his departure for the war. The child was a son and the family believe that Eldred's wife was possibly interned during the war.

Family believe Eldred used the forename Richard on enlistment because he was underage age.

According to his family the wounds he died from were received during non-action body recovery.

Medals have been issued to Eldred George's family in New Zealand.

Taken from information provided by Mr K G B McTavish (grand nephew)

Enlisted as Richard and increased age at enlistment AWMM
    • Richard (Eldred Edwin) was the youngest of 17 children. He had 11 brothers and 5 sisters. The second son James Thomas was my great grandfather. I have never heard that he went to NZ and by 1900 he was married with three children. He died in 1910, before Eldred left Scottsdale.

While I have heard that Eldred, Emily (Mrs Peters) and Clara (Mrs Bourke) went to New Zealand, i am not aware of any others in the family going.
I believe that Thomas George moved to Herberton Nth Queensalnd after the death of his wife. His son Frederick Arthur was living there.

Eldred and Sophia had a son Julius born in 1910.

Eldred was 25 yrs of age at the time of his death. Public - Terese - Other relative - 2 April 2017 - Family oral history and Tasmanian BDM records
