    Report
  • My Grandfather, Charles Henry Rumsby, served at Gallipoli with the Wellington Infantry Unit and was wounded on 8th August 1915 at Chunuk Bair. I wish to acknowledge his contribution to our Country's history and the personal hardships he must have endured to fight for his King and Country. He was a young man of 21, having emigrated to N.Z. 3 years earlier leaving his family back home in England for a better life in N.Z. After the War he was successful in getting a ballot farm in Warkworth, where he worked very hard on the land to turn it into a profitable farm only to have to sell it in the 2nd World War when his son enlisted as he was unable to carry on with the physical work that farming entailed. I remember him as a very hardworking and resourceful man, proud of his new homeland and proud to call himself a Kiwi.
