  • E A Scarfe has received the following letter from Hon J Allen Minister of Defence, I have now much pleasure in advising you that a cable has been received intimating that your son 10/1331 Cpl E R F Scarfe with others, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. Particulars of the act of gallantry for which this decoration was awarded will come to hand later. You will, I am sure, feel justly proud of your son's achievement & devotion to duty. Cpl E R Scarfe. DCM, is a well-known Gisborne young man, being 22 yrs of age. He left with the 2nd Refts & participated in the landing at Gallipoli -he spent 11 weeks on the Peninsula, & was then invalided to Egypt, where he spent about 6 months. He declined an appointment the base office, & subsequently went to France Here he was attached to the machine-gun section & was wounded in the hand & when he last wrote home he was In the Hornchurch ho
