  • Last year on the 100th anniversary of Duncan's death at Messines on 7th June 1917. There were seven of his great nieces and nephews in Belgium for the remembrance ceremonies. Siblings Peter & Bob Gillespie, their sisters Clare Palliser, Hilary Coles and Jane Evans and cousins William Lamb and Debbie Cowman.
My father Duncan Gillespie was named after his uncle. My Grandfather Robert Fraser Gillespie was in Belgium at the time of Duncans death and he was later wounded at Passchendaele. It was a very emotional journey visiting those cemeteries and seeing the utter waste of young lives and thinking of what might have been.
