  • Thomas Small was the son of James and Catherine Small, the seventh of nine children.

His mother Catherine Small (nee O'Connor) immigrated from county Kerry in Ireland and his father James Small from Glasgow, Scotland. His parents marrying in Timaru in 1875 and living on a small farm in Fairlie, New Zealand. Thomas' father died when he was still a child in 1895.

Thomas and four of his six brothers; William, Maurice, Daniel and Francis Small, fought in World War I. He enlisted with two of his brothers Maurice and Daniel. Tragically his elder brother Daniel and younger brother Francis were killed in action in 1916 and 1917 respectively. It is believed both him and Maurice saw their brother Daniel die.

Thomas came back from World War I and would marry Annie Elizabeth Irvine and have three daughters, Kathleen, Sylvia and Ruby.

Thomas died in 1946 of complications of lung damage leaving his widow and teenage daughters. He is buried in Lower Hutt after moving to the Wellington area after his marriage to Annie. Public - Sarah - Direct descendant - 24 April 2017 - Family records

  • My beloved great grandfather what I would do just to have got to meet you or just to have one hour with you. My heart breaks knowing you never got to meet your grandchildren or great grandchildren let alone see your girls grow in the amazing women they were. I hear of what you went through during and after the war and it brings me to tears. The heartache of losing Danny right next to you and then learning of the death of your baby brother who went to war a teenager. My mum tells me of the conversations you use to have with my grandmother, your love of reading, scholarly research and gift of the gab and I know you're my kin and feel your loss more.Seeing the family photos of you and your brothers I see our family in all of you. What you and your brothers have sacrificed for us will never be forgotten. You and your brothers names and lives will always be cherished. Love always xxxxx
