    • William Gillott was the son of the late William and Rose Gillott.

    • Trooper William Gillott received a gunshot injury to his right shoulder in a desperate battle fought near Ayun Kara. There were many casualties that day, and great difficulty was experienced in evacuating them. Those that could walk did so, those who were unable to were taken by horse or camel. Men were transported in cacolets (a type of stretcher) strapped one on either side of the animal. The ride was torture, each movement causing the injured great pain. It took three days before William reached a Casualty Clearing Station. On 18 November he was transferred to a hospital train bound for Kantara where he was admitted to the 45th Stationary Hospital. By this time he was in critical condition. He had been seriously wounded, the long journey and the delays in getting treatment had taken its toll. Three days later he was transferred to the 24 Stationary Hospital, also at Kantara. Sadly he died of wounds and a secondary haemorrhage, on 22 November 1917. Trooper William Gillott was buried at Kantara War Cemetery, Egypt. Public - Kaye - Researcher - 9 May 2019 - Military File and Official War History of Wellington Mounted Rifles pg 166 by A W Wilkie
