  • There was another brother, Ralph Burtenshaw Smith, who spent 3 years and 123 days abroad, and who survived to return to NZ.

  • My grandfather survived 4 years and 174 days of World War 1 (see service record I have attached). He had two brothers that did not survive - Frank and Herman Smith. My grandfather returned medically discharged and married my grandmother and the rest is history. It is truly a miracle that my grandfather's descendants exist today - that I exist - probably because of his determination and grit. In 2016, I would like to remember him and have laid a poppy for him on this page, and will be going to Hamilton this Anzac day to remember him at his resting place.
