I Remember him from when I was a little boy. He was retired. A quiet man...puffing on his pipe. Deaf. My father said from the artillery he had served. He landed at Gallipoli and the records show he was invalided back to NZ after a couple of months. My father said that he never spoke of the war. He worked as a cabinet maker for the railways...leaving home (birkenhead) at 3am...getting home late. My father spent his entire life coming to terms with his father's distance and 'lack of love'...leaving my father too struggling. It's our generation that finally understand the sheet horror of what men like my grandfather endured...the harm done to them and their lives. If only we could sit with them and embrace them.
