  • Following discharge from NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch on 17 November 1916, Bert was transferred to Codford Camp, Wiltshire. While still recovering, in the early months of 1917, he was attached to the New Zealand Military Base Post Office which was set up in Regent's Park, Central London.

    He qualified as a First Class Signaller in August 1917 at Dunstable in Bedfordshire, where he was the only Kiwi on the course amongst a handful of Australians, and 100 or so from the UK. He remained at Dunstable as a Signals Instructor unitl January 1918.

    He was promoted to Corporal and continued in his role as Instructor at a number of camps on the Salisbury Plains in Wiltshire- in Sling, Boyton, Codford, Larkhill and bacxk to Sling again. This finished in mid-January 1919 and he left for N.Z. He carried shrapnel in his side for the rest of his life. (Source: Public Source) AWMM
