  • Eliza D STUBBS' brother was Reverend George STUBBS who joined the services in WWII. In 1941 he was lost at sea, believed drowned, when the HMAS Sydney sunk. He was the Chaplin on the H.M.A.S. Sydney, served on loan from the Royal Australian Navy on the NZ Station from 1921 to 1926 and had many friends in NZ. Born in CHCH in 1885, he was educated at Selwyn College, Dunedin and gained the degree of licentiate in theology at Durham University in 1912.
    Before joining the Royal Austalian Navy in 1915, Mr Stubbs was successively curate at Palmerston North and vicar of Balclutha in the 3 yrs following his ordination in 1912. He then transferred to the Australian Navy, and served in most of the ships then on that station. He went back to Australia after his 5 yrs in Auckland and again served as chaplin in various ships.
