    • Nov 17 - ROLL OF HONOR.
Mr E. S. Goldsmith, of Whitaker street, received the sad advice today that his son, Private F. Goldsmith, was killed in action on October 22nd. Private Goldsmith left Gisborne with the l2th Reinforcements, and was attached to the Hawke's Bay Company of the First Wellington Battalion He originally went to Egypt and subsequently to France, where he had been for over year. He had got safely through the Somme, Messines, and other battles, and had also safely emerged from recent fighting in Flanders. A week prior to being killed he had cabled that he was well and going strong. He was Mr Goldsmith's youngest son, and prior to enlisting had been engaged on station contract work at Te Araroa. The second son, Private Albert W. Goldsmith, left for service with the same reinforcements; he was severely wounded, and according to latest advices was at Hornchurch, awaiting a chance to be invalided home.
