  • My Grandfather. I am fortunate enough to have his medals, paybook, discharge paperwork and dog tags. He was primarily a blacksmith so while having the rank of gunner I suspect he would have been busy keeping horses and ironwork going . We were always told hs only injury was from a mule so that makes sense. I have photographs from the Somme and he was part of the big breakthrough the nz div had when first supported by tanks. We moved to Queensland in 1970 and he came with us but died of a stroke I think about 1972. My Dad Graham thorpe was not military but his elder brother James ( Jim) served in ww2 in the Army. He moved to canada when demobbed. My brother Grant has the only Thorpe boys but is now an Aussie so when I die sadly the NZ Thorpe line will end with me.
