    • Ellis Todd was the son of Matilda Marie (Maria, Mary) Todd (nee Fredericksen). His father was Henry Todd.

      Husband of Adelaide Rose Todd (nee Metcalfe).

      Attached 2 ANZAC, Divisional Signals Company, Royal Engineers France from September 1916, still with Company 21 January 1918.

      His son writes. "In 1898 at age 18 Dad and his Brother Fred (16) took up a bush block at Raetihi they felled the trees and turned it into a farm...Dad left Raetihi to war in 1914 and returned to Raetihi in 1919."

      "He spoke of teaming up with Australians in London and also one of his army mates was awarded the VC. He had a lot of time for the British soldier he called them "Tommies" he said when their backs were against the wall the Tommies were great fighters."

      "My Father never spoke much about the war...on the rare occasions when he did it was usually when an ex army mate visited. I had a fabric made device which had two long lengths of cloth about 2.4 metres long and 120mm wide ...at the base of the two lengths was a pouch ..the long lengths were red...white...and yellow... An observation plane would survey the enemy area.... a description would be written placed in the pouch then dropped from the aircraft..My Father told me he would go and collect the pouch sometimes under enemy fire. He said one of his friends doing the same job was killed...he said he was lucky. I had it for years unfortunately it has been lost. He spoke of the "mess" at Gallipoli and blame the British officers.Although he went to ANZAC day he was never happy about going. When he retired and moved to Hastings I would convince him he should go to ANZAC days..it always intrigued me that he and General Andrew Russell who lived in the Hastings area would have long talks together by themselves....there was obviously a connection of some sort."

      "On visiting Wellington when about 10 years old Dad and I went into a government building (it was then the largest wooden building in the world) and in the office of a Mr McDougal who Dad was at the war with Mr McDougal told me "your Father was a great soldier". strange what one remembers."

      Ellis and Adelaide brought up [Mum's] newphew Thomas Otto Metcalfe (NZ414386), he was shoot down and killed flying Wellington Bombers over Germany in 1942...he was 19 years old.



      Next of Kin on the Nominal Roll is incorrectly listed as Mrs Henry Todd. AWMM
    • I would like to correct the next of kin of Ellis Todd...The records state his next of kin was Mrs Henry Todd of Norsewood N.Z....this is incorrect it was Mrs Thomas Todd of Norsewood N.Z.
      Matilda Fredricksen married Thomas Todd at Napier July 12th 1878...Thomas Todd was born in Chorley Lancashire Sept 7th 1855....Matilda was born in Sweden December 23rd 1858.
      I would like to see the record made correct. Thank you. Public - Desmond Ellis - Child - 31 January 2018 - Thomas and Matilda Todd were my Grandparents...I have all the appropriate documents...also the family bible listing family marriages...births and deaths.

      It is sad for me to see that the correction I made in 2018 has not been carried out......
      Ellis Todd's father was NOT Henry Todd it was Thomas Todd born in 1855 in Chorley Lancashire U.K. Ellis Todd was my father. Public - Desmond Ellis - Child - 5 March 2024 - All the required details requires are listed above which I detailed in 2018.
