Biographical information
John Goulstone was the son of William F. and Rose L. Goulstone, of Symonds St., Onehunga, New Zealand.
Embarked Wellington, 12 June 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 16 August 1917, and marched into Sling Camp.
Proceeded overseas to France, 14 October 1917; joined 1st Bn, Wellington Infantry Regiment, in the field, 14 November 1917, and posted to 17th Company.
Detached to 1st Canadian Tunnelling Company, 11 December 1917; rejoined Bn from detachment, 18 January 1918.
Killed in action, 30 March 1918.
Statement by 39795 W. Gilchrist: 'I helped to bury him in a grave with three others, right alongside the railway line. It was the only grave on that spot. We marked it by a cross with the four names on.' Unofficial report by Captain B. Johnstone, Lewis Gun School: 'I have seen his grave half way between Serre and Mailly Maillet on the south side of the Serre Road. He was killed by a sniper.' AWMM
