    • Francis Twisleton was the son of Thomas and Mary Twisleton, of Settle, Yorkshire, England. Married Emily Mary Speedy 12 May 1905; father of Mary Louisa (dob 22 January 1909 and Nancy Groves dob 13 November 1911.

      Gained Captain's commission on 21 October 1914 (Studholme 1928).

Promoted to Major on 27 October 1917 (Studholme 1928).

Obituary read: "Private advice has been received in Gisborne of the death from wounds of Captain F. M. Twisleton, of the Auckland Mounted Rifles. Captain Twisleton went with the second reinforcements, taking with him into camp forty members of the Poverty Bay squadron of the Legion of Frontiersmen. They were attached to the Otago Mounted Rifles to make up deficiencies. Captain Twisleton gained the Military Cross for service on Gallipoli. When the troops were sent to France the Otago Mounted Rifles under his command were formed into a company of the Pioneer Battalion, and he served with them throughout the Somme and Messines operations. Latterly there was further reorganization, and Captain Twisleton, who had been suffering in health, applied for a transfer to Palestine. This was apparently granted, as he is listed with the Auckland Mounted Rifles. Mrs. Twisleton and children are at present residing in England." (Auckland Weekly News, 29 November 1917, p. 20)

Serial Number is incorrectly recorded in Nominal Rolls as 9/622

  • My grandfather, Henry Lea Twisleton was Frank Twisleton's brother. I have Frank's book of his letters and his portrait left to me by his daughter Nancy Twisleton along with many more photos and articles. Frank's gun from Gallipoli is in the Napier museum and has been seen by my grandson, his great-great-great nephew. Our family has grown up with his war stories.

I have sent many photos and articles about Frank to the people organising a centenary of his father Tom Twisleton's death in 1917. This event is being held in Settle, Yorkshire in November 2017 and these items will be on show.
