  • Major Henry Daniel Williams (from Meremere, near Hawera) won the Military Cross (for gallantry). Fought at the large battle near Walkers Top on 19 May 1915, then in the Battle of #3 Post and then the Battle of Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli in Aug 1915 where he was wounded in the leg by a grenade. Recovered and joined the Royal Flying Corps as an Flying Observer for 100 hours in northern Africa. Then became a pilot over Passchendaele the Somme for 252 hours. Military Cross 27th July 1917 when he was attacked by two German Fighters in his B.E.3 shot one down and drove the other off while still directing artillery. Assigned as a Flight Commander/Instructor to improve flight training schools in England. After the war Henry was asked to set up the Air Force in NZ but declined to go farming at Cambridge. There are photos of him in WWI on the Wings Over Cambridge website. Log book MOTAT auckland
