  • Jim was an avid letter writer and sent many postcards and photos to his family, fiancee and friends. Unfortunately, he experienced considerable frustration with not receiving mail which was instead, he suspected, delivered to other chaps with the same name. His letters are articulate, informative, compassionate and personal. I feel a very deep connection, in my soul, to this extraordinary young man and his world view. Jim's father received a wonderful and sincere letter in 1918 from his commanding officer, 2nd Lieut C B McClure, explaining the circumstances of Jim's death on 12 October at Bellevue Spur, Zonnebeke (Passchendaele), and commending his bravery. Sadly, on page 216 of A E Byrne’s Official History of the Otago Regiment in the Great War 1914 - 1918, Byrne identifies McClure's companion as Pte A.E. Greene.
