Trooper Uma Athol Green only son of Mr W J Green whose death from wounds sustained in Palestine was reported yesterday, enlisted before he had reached his 18th birthday, and left NZ with the 5th Mounted Infantry Reinforcements. He served practically through the whole of the Gallipoli campaign, being invalided only a few days before the evacuation in consequence of frostbite sustained during the bitter November snowstorm. He participated later in actions in the Sinai Peninsula and along the Canal, .and in the battles that marked the British advance into Palestine .Trooper Green was a keen athlete and represented the High School in various events. After leaving school received a business training with Messrs Williams & Kettle and subsequently took up sheep-farming in the Kanakanaia district. He was an exceedly popular lad and the news of his death has been received with many expressions of regret. Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 23 September 2015 - Poverty Bay Herald, Volume XLIV, Issue 14463, 24 November 1917, Page 3 Nov 1917 - ROLL OF HONOR. Mr. W. J. Green, of Messrs. Petti and Co., was advised this afternoon that his son, Trooper Uma Athol Green, died of wounds on November 14th. Trooper Green left New Zealand with one of the early reinforcements, enlisting before he became 20 years of age, and has seen service m Egypt, and Palestine with the mounted troops. He no doubt met his death in the recent advance. Before enlisting he was engaged in station life m the Kanakanae district. He was a lad of sterling quality, much beloved by all who knew him. Much sympathy will be extended to his parents in their sad loss.
