  • Frank Baine was the son of Peter and Miriam Baine, of Te Aroha.

Private Baine's military record shows him as missing early after his arrival at Gallipoli. Two days later he is reported as safe and back at his unit. This occurred about three months before his missing in action report. Probably separated during a night patrol.

In 1909 the New Zealand government passed the 1909 Defence Act which created a territorial force recruited from Compulsory Military Training. The purpose was to have a body of men already trained in the event of defence of the country. When Britain declared war on Germany NZ offered the British government an Expeditionary Force. Volunteers were called for from the Territorials. These volunteers weresent to camps at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin for training. On 8 August 1915 New Zealand units led by Lt. Colonel Malone and his Wellington Regiment captured Chunuk Bair. Taking Chunuk Bair was the high point of the campaign for the New Zealanders. On 10 August, however , it was re-taken by the Turks. Like other actions in the general attack, the Chunuk Bair assault was a costly failure. (Source: New Zealanders At War by Michael King, page 127)

    Reported missing, 8 August 1915.
Board of Enquiry, held at Moascar Camp, Ismailia, 16 January 1916, concluded 'Believed dead'.

Parents: Peter and Miriam Baine, Te Aroha AWMM
