  • Percy was born in Wairoa in 1894, his father was Edward Percy Smyrk (d.1938)

    Percy was educated at Napier Main School then Napier Boys High School and joined the Hawke's Bay Hospital Board in 1912 as a clerk. After the War he returned to the Hawkes Bay Hospital Board. In 1927 he was appointed the Managing Secretary to the Waipawa Hospital Board also of the Pukeora Sanatorium Committee at Waipukarau and held that post until his death. He was a keen sportsman in his younger days (An HB rugby referee), a keen trout fisherman and a horticulturalist and a stamp collector. He married Dores (nee Waterworth) in 1920 - they had one daughter Joan (Miller) and three grandchildren, Judith, Susan and Richard Miller. Percy and Dores lived in Waipukarau from 1927 until Percy died suddenly in April 1950 aged 56 years.

    Percy enlisted 9 September 1915 and was discharged no longer physically fit on account of wounds recieved in action, 10 August 1917. He served with the 9th Hawke's Bay Company of the Wellington Regiment as a private then promoted to corporal and later sergeant. Percy was in the NZEF in the NZ Rifles Brigade. He was wounded on the Somme on 15 September 1916 and was invalided back to NZ the following year.
