  • Obituary
A number of letters from officers in France have been received by Mr. E. E. Grimwade, in connection with the death of his son, Lieutenant E. N. Grimwade, who succumbed to wounds on August 1. Lieutenant Grimwade left New Zealand with the twentieth reinforcements. His brother, Leonard, was killed at Gallipoli soon after the landing. Writing of the death of Lieutenant Grimwade, Lieutenant P. Williamson says:- 'When he was hit he was not on duty, but was at his own risk looking around and attending to the comfort of his men. As an officer he was beloved and respected by all who knew him.' Lieutenant F. de la Mare wrote:- 'Your son was in charge of several advanced posts. Having established himself in one, he made his way across the open to see if all was well with the non-commissioned officers in charge of the others. It was a duty under the circumstances which only a very gallant man would have attempted. He placed, as he always did, the safety and comfort of his men before his own.' Captain W. Watson wrote:- 'Your son proved himself a most gallant and courageous officer, with a supreme contempt for danger and a high regard for duty.' (Auckland Weekly News, 8 November 1917, p. 22) AWMM
