    Report
  • Following a long and painful illness as the result of disabilities contracted in active service at the Great War, the death occurred at the Cook Hospital this morning of Alfred Davis, aged 69 years, of Waerenga-a-hika. The deceased, who was the son of the late George Davis of Matawhero, was born in Gisborne & passed his early days here. Leaving NZ with the 9th reinforcements, Alfred Davis served in Egypt & France with the 2nd battalion of the NZ Rifle Brigade. He was gassed while in France & suffered considerably from rheumatism. He was discharged as unfit for active service just before the Armistice was signed. .Since returning to NZ Mr Davis' disabilities have troubled him considerably & he has been a patient in the Cook Hospital on a number of occasions. His last spell in hospital was for 8 months. Despite his severe suffering, Mr. Davis put up a great fight.
