  • "Herbert Baird joined the 2 Battalion, Canterbury Infantry Regiment as a private and left for France on 7 April 1916. On 24 August 1916 he was appointed Lance Corporal whilst training for fighting on the Somme." (Church, p.95)

    "A month after joining his Battalion Herbert Baird was wounded in action on 24 September. On the night of 21/22 September the 2 Canterbury Regiment had been relieved from the trenches on the line near Flers, and went back to trenches just north of the Longueval-Bazentin le Grand road. It was during this period that Herbert Baird received shell wounds to his leg, which resulted in a compound fracture of the femur." (Church, p.95)

    He was immediately evacuated to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst. AWMM
