    Won his distinction in the disastrous Passchendaele Affair of October 1917 when facing the famous death's head Hussars. Barrage from both sides fell behind the respective enemies thus cutting off the combatants completely. In less than a minute from the commencement of the attack. Lieutenant Lang was the only officer of his company left. London Gazette. AWMM

  • He was the son of Charles John & Willina Johanna LANG (nee McKay) from Langs Beach. They had eight children.

    On 24th January 1924, he married Edith Emily ‘Doreen’ McKENZIE at the Whangarei Presbyterian Church. They had six children – Margaret, Hector, Anne, Mary, Ian and Donald.     • Lt Colonel W. R. Lang – The death occurred today in Whangarei Hospital of Lieutenant Colonel William Robert Lang, of Langs Beach. He was 80.
      Colonel Lang was educated at the Waipu Cove and Bream Tail Schools, and spent his life working the farm first taken up by his grandfather, one of the Waipu pioneers.
      He served with the Otago Mounted Rifles and Auckland Infantry with the rank of captain in WW1. He served in WW2 with the home guard in NZ with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
      Colonel Lang was president of the Waipu A & P Society for six years, was chairman of the Waipu River Board from 1950 to 1959, president of the Waipu RSA, and a member of the Masonic order for 50 years. On October 27, 1970, at Whangarei, dearly loved husband of Doreen (Langs Beach, Waipu), much loved father of Hector (Waipu), Anne (Mrs R. E. Greed, Hinuera), Mary (Mrs N. W. Campbell, Auckland), Ian (Palmerston North) and Donald (U.S.A.), loved father-in-law of Joan, Dick, Norman, Margaret & Jean, and cherished grandfather of 17 grandchildren; aged 80 years. At rest.
