      Citation for D.C.M.: Temp. Lance Corporal, 2nd. Batt., Auckland Regiment London Gazette: 17 April 1917, p. 3695 For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of a party of stretcher-bearers. He worked fearlessly and continuously both in "No Man's Land" and in our front line under very heavy fire. Later, although himself wounded, he continued to tend the wounded until the completion of the operations. AWMM

On 10 November took a patrol to Givry, then 5.000 yards in front of front line with a mission to report on roads, railways and crossings over river to Givry, his patrol met with very heavy fire but carved out their job and his extraction of his men in the face of the machine-gun fire was a masterly piece of leadership. His reports were very exact and the G.O.C. Brigade personally complemented him on all occasions during these operations this NCO has proved fearless and resourceful. AWMM
