When in charge of a company forming part of the leading wave of an assault, his company suffered severely from machine gun fire and was held up. Accompanied by a non commissioned officer, Captain Gray went forward to a pill box, rushed the machine gun and captured it together with eight prisoners, thus enabled the advance to continue. Though twice buried by shells he came back to report to his Commanding Officer, and then rejoined his company. London Gazette. AWMM
