  • MR. GEORGE A WOOD
    The death occurred at the Cook Hospital on Friday of Mr. George Albert Wood, aged 73, a British Army veteran and formerly employed for many years by the Public Works Department in this district. He had been ailing for the past three months. He was born in Plympton St. Mary’s, England, and as a young Man joined the 18th Battery, Royal Field Artillery.

  • He served with that unit for a lengthy enlistment, which included service in Egypt & India, in contact with the enemy & also served through the South African war. He came to NZ 30 yrs ago, & settled in Auckland, where he married. When the last war broke out, he reported as a member of the reserve, & served a further 4 years in a home-defense unit, with the rank of sergeant. After his discharge, he worked with the Public Works Department until his retirement a few years ago. He was highly respected, and had a wide circle of friends, who will accord deep sympathy to Mrs. Wood. The funeral will leave Cochrane’s private chapel after a short service at 1.45 p.m. to-day.
