  • Immigrated to NZ in 1913, teacher at Tangowahine, near Dargaville.

    Left for France on 1 March 1917 and was attached to Base Depot at Etaples.

    He was wounded by shell fire on 7 June at Messines and admitted to the No 11 Casualty Clearing Station, then the No 1 South African General Hospital and finally the No 5 Convalescent Depot. After treatment to his wounds , including his eyes (shattered spectacles) he rejoined his battalion on 22 September.

    He kept a diary and had recorded his thoughts in shorthand.

    Private Hamley was with his battalion when it came under heavy machine-gun fire during the attack. He received serous bullet wounds to the neck and stomach and died two days later. At the same time between being wounded and death, and obviously aware of the serious nature of his injuries, he wrote his final entry (in longhand) in the diary. It reads " Dear M D & G ... Think I'm dying ... Best love...don't fret...Tell Dorothy...Rob." (Source : Army News no. 308, 11 May 2004)
