  • According to Bruce Guildford, Donald's son:

"Donald Guildford was gassed by the Germans and invalided to England for treatment. While in France he had received a food parcel from England, which was supposed to be totally anonymous, which contained, among other things, some hard-boiled eggs with the names and addresses of [my mother and her sister].

On his recovery he went to visit their village before returning to the front. When hostilities ended he returned to England to await repatriation to New Zealand. He paid another visit to Seaton Ross and proposed to [my mother]. Her introduction to New Zealand was not very pleasant, there being such a shortage of marriage age males that [mum's] arrival with one, as a bride, was most unpopular." AWMM
