    • Serial Number appears as 13/3093 in Nominal Rolls, as 13/3093B in Archives New Zealand AWMM
    • Campbell Birss, a trooper with the Mounted Rifles in the Middle East, transferred to the Machinegun Corps when there was a call for volunteers, and he served in the trenches in France. There he contracted tuberculosis. He celebrated his 21st birthday in the troop ship on the way back to New Zealand at the war's end. The tuberculosis recurred, fatally, in the 1930s when Campbell was married with four children. At the time he was manager of a company in Dunedin. His family donated to the Army Museum the saddle cloth he had treasured from when he had been a mounted trooper. Public - John Neill - Other relative - 9 September 2017 - These details are from conversations with his widow, Marion Birss, and with his daughters.
