John Lewis Torkildsen Hansen. - - We do remember you John. Often throughout each passing year. Every weekend when I dance in freedom to delightful music at RSA venues - - - we do remember.

John Torkilsen was born June 12, 1894 as John Lewis Hansen, the 11th child of Peter Edvard Hansen and Jørgine Larsdatter Hansen being Norwegian settlers of Norsewood, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. They had arrived into Napier during 1872 and were founding settlers of Norsewood. John's mother sadly died on June 25, 1894 just 13 days after John's birth. John was taken into the home of fellow Norwegian settlers and close family friends Ole and Maren Torkildsen ( correct spelling) and there raised with their three children. The Hansen descendants are grateful to the Torkildsen family for having shown such compassion with love and care of John Lewis through to adulthood to then be snatched by the viciousness of war. A change has been made on the Cenotaph at Dannevirke, Hawkes Bay, NZ with the addition of the birth name Hansen.
