  • John Steel was the son of Jessie and the late Alexander Steel, of West Plains, Southland, New Zealand.

    12 October 1915 – Entered Trentham camp

    5 February 1916 – Embarked from Wellington onboard HMNZT 42 – NZ Troopship, Ulimaroa. 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade, ‘D’ company

    13 March 1916 – Disembarked Suez

    7 April 1916 – Embarked for France on ship Alaunia

    15 September 1916 – Wounded in field. Right arm. (Abbey road/Flag Lane area, near Flers)

    16 September 1916 – In No1 South African Hospital, Abbeville

    17 September 1916 – In No7 Canadian General Hospital, Le Treport

    12 October 1916 – In No3 Convelescant Hospital,Wimeraux

    25 October 1916 – Marched into Etaples

    14 November 1916 – Rejoined Unit in field. (somewhere near Fleurbaix)

    12 March 1917 – Detached to Working Battalion

    2 April 1917 – Rejoined Unit. (Training at the Tilques Training area near Wisques)

    21 April 1917 – Detached to Working Battalion

    19 May 1917 – Rejoined Unit. (near Steenebeck).

    30 May 1917 – Detached to Reinforcements Camp

    30 May 1917 – To U K on Leave

    12 June 1917 – Rejoined Unit. (near Nieppe)

    19 August 1917 – Killed in Action. Warneton sector, North of river Douve, forward slopes of Messines ridge.

    Two sons were killed in WW1, brothers Thomas Robert Steel (13113) and John Steel (25/681)

    Wounded in action, 15 September 1916 (gun shot wound, left arm), and admitted to 1/1 Midland Division Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to No 1 South African General Hospital, Abbeville, 16 September 1916; to No 7 Canadian General Hospital, Le Treport, 17 September 1916; to No 3 Convalescent Depot, Wimereux, 12 October 1916; to Base Depot, Etaples, 25 October 1916; rejoined Bn, in the field, 14 November 1916.
    Detached to Working Bn, 12 March 1917; rejoined Rifle Bn, 2 April 1917.
    Detached to Working Bn, 21 April 1917; rejoined Rifle Bn, 19 May 1917.
    On leave to United Kingdom, 30 May 1917; rejoined Bn from leave, 12 June 1917.
    Killed in action, 19 August 1917.
