  • While researching the Harding family I noted that Stephen Thomas Sydney Harding had died in France in 1917. Tom, as he was known was still only 20 years of age when he died of wounds at Ypres in March 1917.
Like my uncle, Selwyn, Tom was a gunner in the NZ Artillery. He had his whole life ahead of him only to lose it in the bloody slaughterhouse of Flanders. It is said that NZ ( and Australia among others ) never fully recovered from the loss of so many of their finest young men in 1914-18.
Rest in peace Tom -you are still remembered by cousins in Britain and by those in NZ also.

  • A message from a distant Harding cousin in England. We lay a white rose on your grave in Belgium in memory of our New Zealand cousin. You are not forgotten.
