  • Obituary
With the passing, yesterday, at the Palmerston North Hospital of Mr William John Paine there has been removed one whose association with the Pohangina Valley was well known, as he conducted a general store at Raumai for a number of years. Mr Paine was a popular member of the community and will be missed by the settlers in the valley. He had an enviable war record, having enlisted at the age of 50 after his son [Sydney] had been killed o the Gallipoli Peninsula and served in Egypt and France as a sergeant in the Machine Gun Corps. He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry on the field. In reunions of the corps he has been affectionally eferred to as the 'father of the corps' on account of his seniority in years.
