    William Forrest Fowlds -1894-1976

William was the youngest son of The Honourable Sir George Fowlds and Lady Fowlds and grew up in Auckland. Sir George served on the Auckland City Council from 1899 and from 1902-1911 he was the MP for Grey Lynn and a member of the Liberal Party and served as a Minister. William was educated at Pt Chevalier and Kings College. He trained as an optician and went overseas in 1916. In the Kings Birthday Honours of 1918 he was awarded the Military Cross.

On his return to NZ he went into partnership with John Seabrook forming Seabrook Fowlds and Company in 1920 who had the license to sell Leyland lorries. By 1924 the firm changed to be a single brand importer and held the license for Austin Distributors in NZ. In 1923 he married Geraldine Mary Olivia Wooldridge. Her late father had lived in Penang, Straits Settlements and her mother’s address was Henley-on-Thames in England.
According to the Electoral rolls he lived in Remuera and was listed as an importer and company director until his retirement in 1972.

In The Truth of 1930, it is recorded that as a younger man he played senior rugby but now his passion was tennis. In 1941 he was elected to the Auckland City Council where he served until 1947.
He died in 1976 aged 81 and is buried in Purewa Cemetery with his wife.

Above biography was transcribed, researched and written by Margaret Nash of Panmure Branch of NZSG

  • I am married to a relative of William Forrest Fowlds. The branch of the family now spells the surname FAULDS. We have continued the use of Fowlds/Faulds family forenames - Matthew (William Forrest Fowlds's grandfather's name), William and George (William Forrest Fowlds's father's name). My husband Ian Faulds and I shall be visiting Auckland in September 2015 and intend to visit the Museum. We would like to know more about William Forrest Fowlds, particularly why he was awarded a military cross, and Sir George Fowlds (his father). Family legend has it that Sir George Fowlds gave his father Matthew Fowlds' weaving loom to a museum in Auckland. Do you have any record of this and does it still exist? I see the photograph of Matthew at his loom (centenarian weaver) is in your records.
