    • Reported Prisoner of War in Turkey in the Chronicles of N.Z.E.F.' 15.11. 1916, p.129.

The Chronicles of the NZEF, March 14, 1917 states: "The sad news of another death among our prisoners of war in Turkey has just been received in London - Trooper J. A. Harney, 13/911, Auckland Mounted Rifles, having died at Afion-Kara-Hissar of eruptive typhus, on the 15th November last. His next-of-kin is his brother, Mr James A. Harney, of Walton, Waikato, NZ. The last comunication received from Trooper Harney, by the High Commissioner, was dated the 16th October last. He had written preivously on a postcard, dated the 2nd September: 'We are at a nice place - very like Mount Eden, N.Z.; we are having splendid weather, and am keeping fairly well'." AWMM
