    • Martin Harper was the brother of J. M. G. Harper, of Ohakune Junction, New Zealand.

      Served as Sergeant in the 9th Reinforcements; enlisted, 14 October 1914; discharged as unfit (haemorrhoids and rheumatics), 31 May 1916.
      War service: Western Front
      Embarked Wellington, 26 July 1917; disembarked Plymouth, England, 24 September 1917; marched into 5th Reserve Bn, Brocton, and posted to NZ Rifle Brigade.
      Qualified as 'Very Fair' at Rifle Brigade School of Instruction, 4 December 1917.
      Proceeded overseas to France, 26 December 1917; confirmed in rank of Corporal (qualified 'good' in exam), 26 December 1917; joined 1st Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 20 January 1918, and posted to E Company.
      Wounded in action, 30 August 1918.
      Died of wounds, 30 August 1918.

    • Martin was one of 6 brothers who enlisted in WW1. The photo in the gallery of images shows, left to right: Ernest HARPER Service# 48201, Martin Robert HARPER Service# 9/1856, Alan HARPER (seated) Service# 12/4002, George HARPER Service# 56003, William HARPER (inset) Service# 65562. Frank HARPER, who is not in the photo enlisted as George Francis HARPER Service# 10/3586.
      Martin was the only brother who did not return to New Zealand, having died of wounds. Although the other brothers all returned, their lives were forever changed, having to live with various wounds, both physical and emotional.
