  • On the 21 September on the Western Front, Alfred Harris received gunshot wounds to his left thigh. The severity of these injuries necessitated his transfer to England. he arrived at No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst on 9 October, he died one week later. (Church, p.110) AWMM

    Private Alfred Leonard Harris, who has died of wounds, was the second son of Mrs. A. W. Harris, of Matawai. He was educated at Gisborne school. He enlisted with the Ninth Reinforcements from Murchison, where he had been farming for about six years. His father and a brother are also at the front.
