    Joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, 18 May 1916, and posted to 4th Company.
    Appointed Lance Corporal (unpaid), in the field, 8 September 1916; promoted Corporal, 12 October 1916; Sergeant, 1 November 1916.
    Found guilty, 10 May 1917, of being absent without leave from 9.15 pm, 9 May, to 6.30 am, 10 May 1917: forfeited 1 day's pay by Royal Warrant, and admonished.
    On leave to United Kingdom, 7 August 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, from leave, 19 August 1917.
    Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 15 October 1917 (injured foot), and transferred same day to No 10 Casualty Clearing Station; to No 35 General Hospital, Calais, 16 October 1917; to England, 18 October 1917, and admitted to Military Hospital, Tooting, 19 October 1917; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 4 January 1918.
    Found guilty, 7 January 1918, of being absent without leave from 9 pm, 5 January, to 9 pm, 6 January 1918: forfeited 2 days' pay under Royal Warrant.
    Marched in to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 27 January 1918.
    Attached to 5th Reserve Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, Sling Camp, 16 April 1918.
