London Gazette, 28 January 1918, p1405, Rec No 1612: During operation Belle Vue Spur near Passchendale on 12th October, Sapper Clark went forward with 2nd Brigade Forward Station Party about midnight. Under shellfire they wended their way towards the front line. At daylight they were met by heavy machine gun and shellfire. Sapper Clark was twice knocked down by concussion and debris but carried on as most of the party had been knocked out. He was eventually the only visual man left but set up station at Waterloo House. Without cover he got "through" to Abraham's Heights and transmitted messages. At this time Waterloo was heavily shelled and his conduct was of exeptional nature. Sapper Clark has done work of the greatest value throughout the period the division has been on the Ypres Front. Clark (father) - this should be mother. AWMM Second son of George & Harriet (nee Wooderson) of Whakahara, Northern Wairoa, Northland. George worked for the NZ Railways. He enlisted in 1914 into the NZ Field Artillery (Signals) Corps (4/1905) and his first overseas war experience was at Samoa as part of the liberation force sent there. He went on to France seeing his remaining service on the Western Front. His younger brother Edwin Mitchelson Clark (12/3920)was killed at Paschendaele 4/10/17. On 12th October 1917 George was awarded the MM at this place. He was an avid writer and kept diaries of his wartime experiences. These are now in the possession of the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington. After surviving many harrowing experiences & near misses he sadly lost his life while attempting to put up a telephone wire at Gezaincourt when a shell landed too close, causing him catastrophic wounds from which he died from. He left behind 8 very sad sisters, a brother & a mother mourning the loss of two of her three sons. He was my great-uncle; my grandmothers brother.
