  • Thomas William Alfred HASSALL was my great, great Uncle being the first male child of Alfred HASSALL and Mary (nee ATKINSON). Alfred and Mary arrived in Auckland from the UK on the ship Hydaspes in 1874 along with their 2 year old daughter Hannah. They had a further seven children with Thomas being the first born in New Zealand.
Unfortunately Alfred and Mary's surname was recorded as HASSELL when they arrived and the incorrect spelling of the surname followed through into quite a few official records, including Thomas's birth, marriage and war records.
Alfred HASSALL was born in 1852 in Staffordshire (UK) and Mary ATKINSON was born in 1853 in Yorkshire (UK) and they were married in Gilling, Yorkshire (UK) in 1872.
