Obituary: Auckland Weekly News, 15 November 1917, p. 21. "Lance-Corporal C. J. Hawke, aged 28 years, who was killed in action in France on October 12, was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hawke, of Martinborough, late of Greytown. He was well-known in Greytown and Martinborough. He worked for the W.F.C.A. at Greytown for a number of years, also for Mr. Kershaw, Martinborough. He enlisted with the tenth reinforcements, and went through practically all the heavy fighting in France, being right through the Somme, Messines, and other big battles. He came through without hurt until October 12, when he was killed." AWMM

  • On behalf of my Grandad, your nephew called Adrian, son of your sister known as Kitty, thank you for all you did for our country. You are remembered and your memorials at Masterton and in Greytown are visited by at least three of Kitty's descendants. Kitty's son Ian has a son Donald who also visits. God bless your soul and all the souls of the lives lost. We pray for world peace.
