  • His mother's name was Nancy (nee Sherman), father's name Thomas Fleming of Totara North. Alec was the 9th child of 19 and the 6th son

    Alec enlisted on his 21st birthday.

    Alec was in Egypt from 2 May - 20th May 1916 where he then embarked from Alexandria for France on the Ivernia.

    28th May 1916 he arrived at NZ base Depot, Etaples

    He was posted to active service in the field 20 June 1916 - in the trenches at Armentieres, northern France.

    Battle of Somme involvement at the time it was reopened for the offensive near Flers on the morning of 15th September 1916. Five days into the fighting he was severely wounded. The wounds led to his being invalided out of the armed forces and directly contributed to his somewhat premature death.

    Married Sarah Matilda nee Dangen in 1922. Sons Alexander and Abner

    Seven brothers served in WW1, all on the Western Front: Alexander Fleming (25/1729; 812475), Robert John (28869), William Henry (39658), Thomas George (14251), Samuel (53731), Charles Frederick (71633) and Dover (14249)

    Alec Fleming served in the National Military Reserve in Whangarei, New Zealand during WW2.

    The Second Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, New Zealand Rifle Brigade sailed with the 11th Reinforcements AWMM
