  • Robert Hawkes was the son of Richard Mills and Mary Hawkes, of Tapu, Thames, New Zealand.

    Disembarked Suez, 8 February 1916.
    Admitted to 4th Auxiliary Hospital, Abbassia, 19 February 1916 (measles); discharged to duty, 6 March 1916.
    Joined 2nd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, Moascar, 18 March 1916.
    Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 8 April 1916.
    Wounded in action, 6 June 1917 (gun shot wound, right arm), and admitted to No 77 Field Ambulance; transferred to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, 7 June 1917; to No 1 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 7 June 1917; discharged to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 13 June 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 26 June 1917.
    On leave, 11 July 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 23 July 1917.
    Sent to hospital as batman, 7 August 1917; rejoined unit, 4 August 1917.
    Detached to School of Instruction, 19 July 1917; rejoined unit, 27 October 1917.
    Detached to Headquarters, NZ Division, 29 November 1917; rejoined unit, 26 February 1918.
    On leave to United Kingdom, 10 March 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 4 April 1918.
