    • Walter James Ballard was the son of the late James & Emily Ballard. He lied about his age to be able to enlist, he was 42 when he attested. Walter James was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire as was his sister Constance Emily Johnson neé Ballard to whom his medals were sent. The family arrived in Wellington aboard the ship Strathnaver on 1st June 1874. James had been a gardener & was born in Taplow, Buckinghamshire, England.
