      London Gazette 16/08/1917. "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He and four others attacked a strong enemy party who were holding the cellar of a building and although greatly outnumbered. They killed twenty of the enemy and drove the remainder from their position. After the Sergeant in Charge had been wounded he showed the greatest promptitude in taking command, only he and another man of his party being left unwounded." AWMM
