  • Thomas Black was a colleague of my grandfather (George McLaren 12/2419) in WW1. Both were NCO's together in the 3rd Auckland Company, 1st Auckland Infantry Battalion.

    Thomas fought in the Battle of Messines and won the DCM in the battle of Passchendaele. He is undoubtable a war hero.

    Thomas is mentioned several times in George's diaries, during the build up to the Battle of Messines. I have uploaded of photo of George with three other 3rd Auckland NCO's, Thomas Black is standing on the left, behind my Grandfather. I have also uploaded a photo of him with Pte John McMahon (14307) who was killed from wounds on the 13th of June 1917.

    Both my Grandfather and Thomas Black made it home to NZ after the war. George to Palmerston, Thomas to Opotiki in the Bay of Plenty.

    Thank you to Sonia Edwards from Opotiki for helping me find Thomas Black late in 2018.
